I’ve been playing around with hearts. It’s been fun !

I came up with 3D heart earrings, a few felt pins, a couple of journals, and a “Heartfelt Doodle.” All in the name of Valentine’s Day.

These are an example of my 3D Heart Earrings.

They are kind of unique because I fashioned them out of specialty paper and even tissue boxes. As you know my Muse likes to Upcycle.

Hearts! & More Hearts!

For some reason I have always loved hearts. They were fun to draw when I was a kid, and to me they are a lovely symbol.

I’m always seeing hearts – when I go walking - gum stuck to the sidewalk looks like a heart. Out in nature – I see hearts on tree bark or a leaf on the ground looks like a heart. Even some potato chips have heart shapes.

There are hearts everywhere.

So, today is dedicated to hearts. I’m making earrings out of paper hearts. I’m painting wooden hearts and even making hearts out of my denim scraps left over from past “upcycled” projects.

Hearts are FUN! Lets see what I come up with today.

Birthday Trip

On Dec 1st I went on a neat bus trip to Newport, RI. We visited the Marble House which was all decorated for Christmas. It was enjoyable learning about the history of this “summer cottage”!!! Wow!

Next, we went out to eat at the Atlantic Beach Restaurant. The food was Ok, but the wait staff had much to be desired. From there we toured around Newport looking at other beautiful mansions and the lovely ocean views.

Then, to top off the day, we went to Attleboro, MA to the LaSalette Shrine. There we caught the end of Christmas Concert and happily explored the gift shop.

At 5:00 PM there was a prayer service at the beautiful outdoor manger with caroling, too. When that was over they lit up all the outdoor lighted displays at once!!! It was spectacular. Everyone, was oohing and awing!

I enjoyed walking around and looking a all the lights and taking pictures. What made the trip was the mild December weather we were having. The day was clear and sunny and not cold and the evening was lovely.

All in all, I had a fun BD.

I am fortunate to have inherited my Dad’s computer – so I’ve decided to put it to good use. I’m using it exclusively for photos and my Blogging! Now, I’ll be able to blog to my heart’s content.

This is a wonderful way to go into the new year! Can you believe we are almost into 2012 already?

One more craft show to go....

I'm actually sorry the season of craft fairs is almost over. Aside from all the work in transporting tables and supplies, I've really enjoyed meeting the people who stop by my table. It's interesting to discover what people are buying this year. It seems to be a little of everything that I make, and not just jewelry, or journals or restyled items. I thought I'd find only certain items selling but it seems to be a variety. Oh, I'm not complaining. It's wonderful to have the public like everything I make. :)

One more fair to concentrate on! Once this fair is done I'll work on decorating my home for the holiday. The lovely mild weather we've been enjoying has helped make everything more enjoyable.

My next Craft Fair is the 2nd Annual North Shore Holiday Gift & Craft Fair to be held on

Sunday, December 11th, 2011 at the Holy Ghost Society Hall in Peabody, MA from 11am – 4pm.

At this Gift and, Craft Fair guests will have the opportunity to shop all types of vendors – crafters, retailers, independent sales consultants, etc. And, me - with my lovely jewelry, hand sewn journals, and Christmas Ornaments crafted from soda cans!

It will be an excellent opportunity to get a jump start on your holiday shopping and find something for everyone on your list!

I've been sooooo busy....

I've been sooooo busy lately...but it's a good busy. I went to a bead show last weekend because I was running out of supplies. The show was huge, and it literally sparkled every where I looked. I always have fun when I attend this show. It's difficult not to over spend because of the many temptations. I was good - I only bought what I needed.

I'm in the Danver's Art Association's Holiday Craft fair which runs from now until Dec. 18th. It's open Saturday and Sunday from 12 until 4 PM. I have one painting in the show, my handmade journals and some jewelry. Oh...and a few Christmas ornaments, too. Every year I'm amazed at the quality and variety of the crafts in this show. There are many talented members in this organization.

Lots of holiday events are planned for Newburyport like holiday art walks, etc. Since my jewelry is in the Sister's We Three on Pleasant St., I'm busy making extra jewelry for them to display...and hopefully sell. I thought I had a lot of jewelry made, but I'm discovering I don't have enough. I'm taking part in more craft fairs this season and I'm (happily) in three stores. This is crunch time. I hope I can make enough to go around...quickly. Next, year I'll know to start creating in June!!! On top of all that - I need to get ready for Thanks Giving Day, too.

Am I the only one feeling the holiday crunch already?

Creativity Trip!

Last Saturday, I treated myself to a day of relaxation and fun. I went on the Holiday Express Bus Trip originating from Absolutely Everything a rubber stamp store in Topsfield, MA.

The bus took us to three other stamp stores - Ink About it in Westin, Right at Home Scrapbooking, and The Paper Source in Boston. It was unusually warm for November, and a beautiful sunny day. I really enjoyed looking at the fall scenery as we were driving along. There was
still some some snow on the ground around the Nashoba Valley area from that crazy snow storm we had the end of October.

Now, why would a “non-scrapbooker, non-rubber stamper” decided to go on such a trip,you ask? Well, I went for inspiration! To me, it was like visiting an art gallery. And, I wasn’t disappointed. I came away full of new ideas and a few new tools, too

Everyone on the bus was pleasant. These ladies were clearly having a good day. Three really wonderful sisters who sat behind me and kept tabs on me so I wouldn’t miss the bus leaving a store.

The bus was clean and comfortable. I thought the name of the bus company was perfect for such a trip. BLOOM

Fun Weekends…

I’m loving this autumn weather! It’s sunny and clear and 79 degrees! Tomorrow the weathermen promise we’ll get in the 80’s. Not bad for October.

Where I am in Ipswich the trees have hardly started to change color at all. I’m thinking that this might be a sign of a mild winter to come. At least that’s what I’m hoping for….a winter with only small amounts of snow. Last year, we got blasted with too many huge snow storms.

Tonight, I get to see George Thorogood and the Destroyers at the Hampton Beach Casino. Should be fun…We have great seats up front.

I’ve been so busy. I haven’t had much chance to post.

Last weekend, I went to a lovely pot luck party for the Danvers Art Association on Sat. Delicious food, and fun company….And, also a walk on the beach, which I adored. It was gray and foggy, but perfect for taking pictures. I’ve been doing a lot of walking lately. I hope I can continue even when the weather turns cold. That’s when I have to push myself to get out and do it.

Then, the weekend before I was in the Ipswich Art Show. It was a pleasure. I entered two watercolor paintings and to my amazement – my Birch Tree won honorable mention. I was a vendor on Sat and Sun and that was fun, too.

Next weekend will be interesting, too, because I’m teaching a class on making journals at the Danvers Art Association. I can’t wait.

So, you see, my life is quite full these days.

Surviving my computer crash, procrastination and the economy

OK, I admit it. It's been ages since I've posted. The computer crash really threw me for a loop. I still haven't figured out where some of my treasured photos have gone. Some of them are of my Father, and are truly precious. I know they are on my computer, but I can't seem to access them. This is a total frustration to me. Next, my posts were doubled on Facebook and Twitter. Not a good thing to happen. - I think I've fixed the problem, but this is a test post for me.

So??? What have I been up to lately? I've become enchanted by handmade journals and books. I just had to experiment by making my own. I've been using "upcycled denim" as covers for some of the journals. They turn out quite earthy and feel good in your hand. I've been making some with collaged covers, too. These are bright and playful. How fun...And now, I'm going to run a workshop class at the Danvers Art Association on how to create your own personal Journal that is unique to each person. I can't wait to turn others on to this process.

I've been doing a lot of procrastinating lately. This is unlike me. I'm working out a plan to get myself going again. Sort of a "back to school" sort of thing. You know, how exciting it used to be to get ready for school. New clothes, books, and new friends. Fall is going to be my new beginning. I can't wait to make pumpkin soup, work in my yard, take long walks on crunchy leaves, have an evening fire in the fire pit...teach my class. No more holding myself back by procrastinating. How about you? What do you do to stop yourself from falling into those slow you down habits?

OH...and, the economy. I'm terribly worried about us as a country. Like so many others, I'm tightening my belt. A much look forward to trip to Maine this fall had to be canceled because of lack of cash. What's with our Congress?????????????

I realize my voice has been missing from my blog for a few weeks now. My computer crash really threw me for a loop, but I'm back and excited to be contributing to my blog once again.

On Sunday - July 31st - the very first day of the 2011 Yankee Homecoming in Newburyport, MA I will be having my first Trunk Show at the Sister's We Three on Pleasant Street in Newburyport.

The Trunk Show runs from 12 noon until about 4:30 PM.

I plan to show my Eco Chic tee shirt necklaces in a beautiful array of summer colors. I'm also showing my enamel creations and silver jewelry. Also, something new for me - my Retro Button line. I've created fun and eclectic looking button bracelets, earrings and necklaces. I can't wait for people to see them because they are quite classy and different.

Here is an example of one of my silver bracelets.

For some reason I can't get at all my photos since the crash. I'm working of fixing the problem, but it is frustrating me! Computers - gotta luv em!!!

I also, plan to bring some of my newly created journals. There will be denim covered journals as well as colorful collaged journals for sale. I recently did a demo for the Danver's Art Association on how to make your own creative journals, and I was asked to do a workshop. Soooo, I am developing just such a workshop to run in the near future! I'm excited about that. I'd love for others to get the same enjoyment out of creating that I do.

Computer crash - a week ago...

Still attempting to get my computer up to snuff since the crash. Mostly, I lost photos and the use of Picassa. Or at least, I didn't get all my photos back, but I'm working on it.

Lesson learned. Update more often.

Experimenting with a few settings on my point and shoot camera on Wed. Looks like I need to play around with these settings a lot more. I was happier with the black and white than the Sepia. Even the black and white didn't turn out as well as I had hoped. I'll keep trying . . .

Painting at the Beach

Painted at the beach with a few artists from the Danvers Art Association. This was on Wednesday, the day of those terrible tornado touch downs in Springfield, MA. It was hot and humid all day. For us, the day started out with thunder and rain, but turned to a gray, humid and very windy afternoon.

At the beach house I walked around experimenting with my camera. I discovered a setting called “vivid” on my camera. It works pretty well on a gray days. Might be too colorful on a sunny day. I also tried the sepia setting and the black and white settings with disappointing results…I’ll have to do some more experimenting.

Twitter! and Me!

I love blogging! It's so much fun. I wish I had more time for writing...but what I enjoy most is sharing photos of places I visit and some of my creations. Also, I have a secret addiction!!! - I love pressing "Next Blog" to see where blogger takes me. Wonderful world of blogs out there, and don't you feel more connected because of blogs? I do.

What have I been up to this week? I've been in de-cluttering mode. I'm attempting to get my art supplies, beads and fabric under control. HELP! I have more items than room for them. It's quite a dilemma. I keep spreading out through my home, and I'm attempting to get it all under control. And, there is always the temptation to purchase more supplies. What's crazy creator to do???

Newburyport, MA walk

Late Saturday afternoon I took a walk in Newburyport, MA with my Daughter. It was partly sunny at my house but the closer I got to Newburyport the foggier the landscape. When we started walking it was really chilly and damp. I was warm enough, but I was wishing I had a hat on my head.

We walked down by the sea wall. You could hardly see the water. It was impossible to see Plum Island from where we were because of the fog. Still, I enjoyed our walk. We found a new path which took us closer to the water and behind some homes and then back out near the Coast Guard and downtown Newburyport.

People in Newburyport love to decorate with an ocean theme. That’s part of the fun of walking around this area.

The Sheep Shearing Festival was fun...

There was a pretty good turn out for the Sheep Shearing Festival in North Andover, MA on Sunday. The weather was cool and damp - in the 50s. Not much fun sitting around in such conditions. The chilly breeze was what really got to us! I think for the festival goers it wasn't as bad because they were milling around and enjoying the vendors and the sheep herding demonstrations. There were a lot of people selling jewelry. One fellow was selling his wife's stunning lampwork beads. I was very temped to buy some. There were face painters for the kids, pony rides, and sand art. Other vendors were selling watercolor prints, signs, aromatic lotions, food, eclectic clothing, scarves, and more.

I would have loved to watch the sheep shearing demonstrations, but I was at my booth while they were going on. The other vendors were nice and friendly. It was a good day.

North Andover Sheep Shearing Festival - May 17th

I'm going to be one of the crafters participating in the North Andover Sheep Shearing Festival this coming Sunday, May 17th, 2011. I'm hoping to sell my beachy jewelry, and my ReStyle Studios "upcycled" necklaces, and accessories, etc. A friend of mine is also going to be there selling her Vintage jewelry.

There will be food from the Lion's Club, Boy Scouts and a few local restaurants, pony rides and other activities. They are planning to have sheep shearing demonstrations by Andy Rice of Hoggets Farm in Brattleboro, Vermont. Also, a small herd of alpacas from a farm in Andover will be on display in a pen area that is like a petting zoo.

I thought my "upcycled" jewelry made from fabric would be a nice compliment to a festival about wool. I'm hoping people like my newest Shabby Chic/ Eco Chic creations. They are perfect for the summer. They look great with tee shirts or even a sun dress! These necklaces can be found at my ReStyle Studios Etsy shop. Just click the photo if interested. Hope it doesn't rain on Sunday. It's the only day in ages the weathermen are actually predicting to be dry. The festival should be fun.

Where did this week go? Color Palette Challenge!

I'm trying to adjust to gray days. It's been gray and rainy all week...And, chilly, too. No wonder I'm vitamin D deficient!

I've had to put my heat on everyday to take the chill off the house. Yesterday, it was really foggy most of the day. I wanted to get out and take some photos, but it started to pour before I got out there. One summer day, I took photos of my kids while we were at the beach in the fog and the pictures came out great because the fog provided an unexpected lovely background.

Since, it's been so dismal I was delighted to find a new Challenge about the use of color. It's run by the girls from 3CreativeStudios - Terri Stegmiller, and Vicki Welsh. On the 16th of every month they announce a new color palette to try. You can use all the colors or just some of them in whatever way you wish. The colors can be used in a painting, quilt, ATC, journal, doll, etc. You post your submission in the 3C'S Flickr group and have a chance to win a prize.

Brimfield, MA–Antiques Extravaganza

There was a tent full of crystal chandeliers!

I’m so fortunate to have wonderful friends. On Thursday, I was whisked off to Brimfield, MA. to discover the delights of a mega-huge antique flea market type show. The size of it was amazing. I’ve never seen anything like it before. Tents and tents and tents of dealers selling everything from vintage buttons, china, jewelry, antique furniture to outdoor statues. There was even a tent full of Irish Linen.

I had heard this show takes more than one day to explore, and I believe it. We saw a lot, but there was more to see when we left. There’s only so much you can do in one day.

I had a lot of fun just taking pictures. I did some shopping, too. Some items were up there in price, a few items were untouchable (for me, anyway.) There were bargains to be had. Especially, if you know your items.

Not only did I have fun with my friends, but the sun was out all day!!! Can’t beat that.

Hope you enjoyed your Mother's Day...

I’m truly blessed. My children made sure I had a great Mother’s Day.

My Daughter was able to visit from Saturday until Monday afternoon. My younger son who is in San Francisco, called and we talked for a while. Then, my older son came to spend Sunday into Monday with us. It was special time. My Daughter cooked us a delicious Mother’s Day dinner.

For Some reason I always love poking around garden centers. We had a hard time deciding which dahlias to grow. They were all so beautiful.

At one point we put bags of the dahlias into our shopping cart to look at the different color combinations. It was a tough decision, but the ones we chose are going to be spectacular. We came up with a pink/peachy colored dahlia, a yellow, deep burgundy, deep red, lavender, and pink. I just wish they would bloom all summer and not just at the end of the season. Can’t wait!

The weather behaved Sunday evening so we could have a fire in the fire pit. This has become a tradition for us. When ever we can, we sit around the fire - look for shooting stars, talk and relax together. Sometimes we toast marshmallows, and make Smores. We’ve been burning the wood from the Maple tree that hit my house in a horrendous wind storm last March. At least some good came from that disaster.

And then, my older son took me dahlia shopping!!! We went to several garden centers on Monday.

International Gem & Jewelry Show, Inc.

On Friday, May 6th my friend dragged me – kicking and screaming to a bead show. It was the International Gem & Jewelry Show in Marlborough, MA at the Royal Plaza Trade Center. Actually, I couldn’t wait to go, but I wanted to keep my spending low. Something that isn’t easy with all the beautiful temptations at these shows. This was the second show of this type that I’ve attended. Such sparkle! You almost needed sunglasses to walk through the place.

Even though there was a tremendous amount of inventory being hawked at the show, the dealers weren’t selling the type of unusual hand crafted beads I use for my eclectic jewelry. Still, it is amazing to see so many glistening beads in one place.

I really behaved myself. Mostly, I purchased beads I would usually use in my jewelry. The only different purchase I made was a pair of silver hoop earrings for myself. It seems counter projective to purchase earrings made by someone else when I make earrings – however, these are the type of hoops that click closed in the back, and I can’t make that type. They are sort of “work horse” earrings.

What a beautiful day. Not only did I have fun, but the weather was mild and sunny While I waited for my friend to arrive I snapped a few spring pictures.

All in all – an inspiring day.

Rattlesnake Gutter

My Dad's apartment is empty now. All done - I handed in the keys. It wasn't as traumatic for me as I had expected. Just a lot of work. Sad though, that we won't be spending time with him there any more.

My friend decided I should get away and go for a ride. Good idea. Helped me not think too deeply that day...

So on Friday...we went to Franklyn County, Ma. We found a place of serenity to walk. I loved the sound of the brook flowing through.

It’s called Rattlesnake Gutter!!!! It seemed more like a gorge to me. Deep stone walls on one side with large rocks that had fallen down eons ago. My photos don't show the height of the rock walls. It would be a treacherous walk in the winter if it were icy because you could slide off the side of the road into the ravine or “Gutter!” Moss covered trees and rocks and brown leaves gave the place a peaceful feeling.

I did it! I'm proud of myself. I finished my book for The Fiction Project, and I sent it back in the mail yesterday.

This may not seem like an accomplishment but for me it was huge. Not only did I write a fiction story which was something out of my comfort zone, but I completed the book while under huge duress. (I must admit creating the book was a wonderful diversion from my worries about my Dad.) And, I got it done on time. That only happened because I decided it was more important to get the book done than to have it perfect. (It worked.)

Next, letting it go...That was a little tough. I wanted to keep it so I could show all my friends. The copies I made are pretty good. However, they don't have the same tactile feel of the book. You can't touch the handmade paper, or feel the fabric collage, or open the interactive page. It's just different.

Below is a picture of the inside of the Brooklyn Art Library that I took off the internet. I wish the library was here in Boston.

New Beginnings

I suppose I've had a re-awakening of sorts.
Perhaps, that's what a death of a loved one will do to you.

I read a great quote that has stuck with me:
"Death is the celebration that teaches us how to live"
Not sure who wrote it, but for me it's true in that I'm making some changes in my life.

1) I've decided to eat healthier - within reason.

2) I'm going to sketch every morning while I sip my (decaf)coffee.

3) OK...I'm getting back to walking. No excuses, I now have time for myself.

4) I've begun a "one line" night time journal

This morning I tried a new recipe.
Not sure if I did it right - it took me way longer to cook the Quinoa than the recipe called for.

I added dried cranberries, walnuts and a few cut up plums.
I used the coconut milk to cook it instead of water, and I liked that.

Hot Quinoa Breakfast Cereal

Ingredients:
1 cup quinoa
2 cups water
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
coconut milk
Stevia or honey

Directions:
Soak the quinoa in cold water for 5 minutes
Drain and rinse - (I couldn't drain it because the grain was too small) I simply added coconut milk to the water
to cook it. Also, It needed more liquid as it cooked.

In a medium saucepan, combine the quinoa, the cranberries, walnuts and plums with the water (and coconut milk if you choose

Simmer until the water is absorbed. It took my quinoa 15 min, but the recipe called for 5 minutes.

Serve with milk and sweeten with Stevia or honey or sugar

Note:
I cooked mine in the coconut milk, but I think this adds too many calories. Next time I'll cook it in water, and add the coconut milk when I eat it. You could use soy milk or milk instead.

I know this is a healthy breakfast, but I wasn't crazy about it.
Maybe, I'll get used to it?

I'm a little afraid the stick will get lost.

Below is the cover I chose. The shells tie into the story. The cover is from one of my watercolors. I had to cut it down to make the cover so I scanned the painting, printed it out on photo paper in matte. Then, I cut it to fit. Only after I glued it on the book did I realize the ink isn't permanent.

The cover looks a bit worn and I like that effect. I sprayed it with fixitive, and I'm hoping it will stand up to handling.

Throughout the book the mischievous muse shows up. These pictures are really me in differnt outfits.

Only my family, friends and blog readers will know who the muse really is. Actually, she is named after my Mom who was a wonderful muse though she didn't know it.

a changed world

It's a different world now for me.
I'm not sure it has all hit home yet.

I don't want to keep talking about my saddness on my blog. At the same time, I don't want anyone to ever think I'm being disrespectful to my Father as I go back to my usual posts.

Two weeks ago today my life changed forever when my Dad passed from this earth. I think I made my Dad proud by dealing with everything involved with his passing. It's amazing how many details needed to be handled - and right away! My family has been extremely supportive, too. Perhaps, being so busy helps you get by...but it's at night when it all hits you.

It's difficult to move on....but I think this is a healthy step.
One of the things I need to do for myself is send in my Fiction Project book before the deadline. My Dad knew about the book and kept asking me how it was coming along. Unfortunately, he never saw the finished book. I think he would like it.

Anyway, tomorrow the book goes in the mail. A creation I don't really want to part with! I wonder if my fellow Fiction Project creators feel the same way. I want to share my book, but it's my baby, and it's hard to let it go.

Here is the saying I picked for my Dad's prayer cards for people to take with them from the funeral home. It seemed like something he would want us to know. It's also, the message I would want my loved ones and friends to hold in their hearts when I pass:

Friends of my Father have told me that even though they really miss him they find themselves smiling when they remember the times with my Dad. To me, that is a most wonderful legacy to leave behind. - My Dad touched other peoples lives in a true and positive way.

my heart is broken...

My Father went in the hospital in January and since then he was in and out of the hospital four times. He also, spent two weeks in a rehab facility where he was doing great until he got hit with the Flu.

In between hospital stays I was taking care of him. He put up an amazing battle to get better, but on Thursday, April 14, 2011 he slipped from this world while I had left the hospital to go home for dinner.

I was stunned because the Doctor told me my Dad had improved so much he would be moved to a regular room the next day. I never expected the phone call saying he had taken a turn for the worse! By the time I rushed back to the hospital he was gone.

Now, I'm playing games in my head. - Perhaps, I should have taken him to the Dr. sooner. I should have asked this question or that question...I shouldn't have left the hospital to go home when I did. I know I need to give it rest, but I just wanted him to get better so badly.

Leo was a World War II Veteran, and a kind, sweet person. He never complained about anything ever. He was mentally with it, too; and he loved baseball.

The funeral is the end of this week.

The funeral is this Friday, Good Friday.

My Dad was well loved and will be truly missed.

cover hesitation...

Oh Gosh, I'm amazed at how difficult it is to figure out a cover for the book I wrote for The Fiction Project. I want to make the cover memorable...or at least nice enough to get someone to open my book! So far, I'm NOT doing very well. I really had hoped a few people would want to read my book while it's on the journey across America. So far, I haven't come up with the right cover design. Nothing seems right.

I've thought about using one or two prints from my watercolors, for the cover, but they don't seem to fit the title. It should be something fun, bright - and I'm just not there yet.

I started painting a background for the cover. It turned out too muddy. Yikes. I was hoping to send my book in soon. I'm going to have to solve this problem quickly!

Now, I'm thinking I might print out one of my beach scenes and use a photo on the cover instead of a painting or print. This might work since I talk about the beach in the story.

I'll have to play with this idea.

The Fiction Project

I've been working on The Art House Co-op's - The Fiction Project for a while now. Actually, I'm almost finished. I'm please with the story I wrote, but I know I rushed to get the book done. I was so sure I wouldn't finish it in time I hurried it along.

Even though I rushed it - I loved every minute of the books creation. It was fun. I went to bed late quite a few nights because I just didn't want to stop working on the book. Part of the suggestions for writing the book were to hand write the story! Well, I think my book would look a lot better if I could have printed it out. No matter how hard I try, my handwriting just isn't the best.

Now, I've come to the part that is holding me back - the cover. I can't seem to decide how to tackle this problem. Should it be a collage? Should I use one of my paintings? Just not sure what I'm going to do yet. Perhaps, I should consult with Melanie. After all, she would probably have an opinion or some magical recipe that would work.

My story is about a mischievous muse named Melanie. She finds a blank, abandoned book and decides to give it a home. She drops it in the lap of a blocked artist and works her magic.
Because of Melanie's mentoring the artist finds her creative voice and the blank, boring book gets completed. The artist then sends the book on to the Art House Co-op to become part of The Fiction Project. It's a simple story, but it has a good message.

farewell to a tree...

I'm always sad to see a tree being cut down. I love trees.

A few months ago, a tremendous, very cool tree at the apartment building where my Dad lives was taken down. This tree used to take my breath away! We were told it was diseased and it had to come down for safety reasons. I think everyone was wishing this wasn't the case. The only saving grace was that parts of the tree were taken to make into furniture by a local craftsman.

The Maple was 200 years old! I felt sick to see it go, but it's a done deal now.

One afternoon, while waiting for the elevator at the apartment I looked out and there below me was the base of the 200 year old tree. To me it looks like an unusual flower.

I had to take pictures of it. This tree is still beautiful even in it's death.

What is it about a blank canvas or a blank book page that is so daunting? There's an idea blooming in our heads...yet, the page stays blank and scary for days. We look at it, but nothing happens.

I finally gulped down my feelings of intimidation. I decided I would start my Fiction Project book yesterday no matter what. I guess, it won't be the most perfect book ever created. It won't even be a stellar example of an altered book because this is my very first project of this sort. That's a fact I will live with. I set my goal as just getting the book completed! To realize my goal I had to start...

Often "Start" is the most important step to a creative adventure even if it's a scary step. Without "Start"....there is never an ending....so I'm excited now. I'm on my way.

Art House Co-op - The Fiction Project 2011

My blank book arrived a few days ago from The Art House Co-op in Brooklyn, New York.

This truly will be a challenge for me, but I'm looking forward to combining writing and art to create my story. The Fiction Project sets its sights on literature and creating a narrative book that fuses writing with art! I believe I need to have the project completed and back in the mail by May 1st so it can join the other books in a tour of the country.

The books will be included in an exhibition visiting galleries and museums in the following cities:

Brooklyn, NY San Francisco, CA Chicago, IL Seattle, WAWinter Park, FL

After the tour of the country these books will return to the Brooklyn Art Library and become part of the permanent collection in New York. How neat is that?

It's Supermoon! A Rare Lunar Event Tonight

Each time I listened to the news the past few days I heard about the "Super Moon."

The reporters said that scientists estimated the moon rising in the east at sunset this Saturday would appear 14 percent bigger than usual, and 30 percent brighter at its peak tonight.

I was excited to attempt to take a few photos. At first, I was disappointed because I saw no sign of the moon at sunset. I thought my only chance of getting a shot of the moon would be at sunset when there was still some light in the sky.

Around 10:00 pm I spied that bright old moon.

I had expected it to seem larger, but it was still beautiful. I grabbed my camera, experimented with a few settings, and I was pleased with the results.

I have a new respect for my camera. The setting I used for these pictures is called "scenery."

Some of you know my dad has been seriously ill.

It's been a long haul from Jan 25th when he first entered the hospital. He's since been in and out of the hospital 3 times!

In between the hospital stays there was a tragic fire in the apartment building where my father lives. Luckily, his apartment was not harmed. Unfortunately, the fire sent him out into the pouring rain where he got a chill...this happened just after he returned home from having pneumonia! Not surprising a few days later he ended up back in the hospital.

The great news is my dad has improved. He's in a rehab facility now and may be going home soon. I'm thrilled and relieved. Now, I can almost catch my breath.

I haven't painted in ages so when I opened a watercolor tray recently I discovered something just so neat. I had placed a paper towel in the container to keep the paint from leaking. To my delight an abstract flower painting emerged.

My paints created a painting on the paper towel!

Magic does happen!!!

Has there ever been a time in your life when bad experiences, stress, medical emergencies, or family troubles totally overwhelmed you? But - then, you discovered a few creative moments helped to lessen your pain? I would really like to hear how "creative salve" helped you at certain troublesome times in your life.

This was my recent experience:

The One World One Heart 2011 event was an amazing glimpse into the creative world of over 800 bloggers. It began Jan 31st and ended on Feb. 17th, 2011.

I learned a lot through this journey. Creative people are extremely willing to share the wonder of their discoveries and talents. They are a delightful group.

Just before OWOH began my father became seriously ill. He was hospitalized twice before coming home again on Valentines Day. (Our special gift.) He's in delicate health, but holding his own right now. He's 93!

I'm blessed to have my dad in my life. I cherish all the moments I spend with him. While he was in the hospital I spent many late evenings (since I was too worried to sleep) visiting the OWOH creative blogs. I found diving into the world of other creatives helped keep my mind from my worries. Now, I feel even closer to all who participated in the OWOH event. Thank you!

Also, I discovered keeping my hands busy helped calm my mind during the hours spent with my father in the hospital. ...Well, one scarf turned into 4, and I dubbed them "Leo Scarves!" They are very special.

I developed quite a reputation at the hospital. A nurse I had never seen before asked me if I was the woman who crochets!

One World One Heart - blog event

Hello - Welcome to my Blog.

My name is Linda Lamore, and I am a creative adventurer.

I live in Ipswich, Ma, USA. A place of beautiful inspiration. I love making jewelry, exploring digital photography, and I paint watercolors,too. I also dabble in mixed media, collage, and I enjoy working with fiber. I'm new to felting, and I'm teaching myself how to crochet.
Recently, I decided to start a line of upcycled - eco chic items. I take tee shirts, jeans and other upcycled fibers and create new items such as necklaces, bangles, purses, scarves and very neat cuff bracelets. This is addicting and fun.

I love to go exploring with my camera. I collect sea glass, shells, drift wood and other natural items to add to my creations. Some days, I think I should concentrate on only one creative venture, but my muse wants to try lots of new things. Do any of you have this happening to you?

...muse gone wild

Perhaps, it's because of winter closing in on me. Longer days inside. The dark showing up at 4:30 PM...but something has happened - my muse has gone wild!

She wants to play and she dances from one project to another. She drags me to book stores and libraries to look for books on all sorts of neat, creative subjects. She frequents YouTube, and search engines, and can't stop learning. It's been fun - almost a little naughty. Maybe, I should focus on other things.....BUT...I will admit I'm surviving the winter and learning, too.

The snow has become a great subject to photograph. I enjoy sharing my pictures and blogging about our recent storms. On the morning of the December storm I took a few beautiful pictures while the street lights were still on. I may even enter them in the next art association show. We'll see. I usually stick to showing my jewelry creations and paintings, but why not - photos, too? See what my muse is doing to me?

For one thing, I've started crocheting again. I haven't touched a crochet hook in years...or a knitting needle for that matter. My enthusiasm for upcycling has been leading me to experiment. I've been making tee shirt yarn, and I have tons of new ideas I want to try.

While exploring yarn, my curiosity has led me to purchase a Mother Marian "Meggie" kick spindle spinning wheel. It's a great invention. I can't wait to get going on it. I'm sure there will be a learning curve. I haven't had the chance to play with it yet. I want to use it to spin unusual yarns. Stay tuned. I'll let everyone know how coordinated I am. Not sure I'm going to be able to do all of this yet, but I'll give it a shot. I'm impressed by the simplicity of "Meggie." She's beautiful.

There's more...valentines, and felting...writing down my dreams in the morning, creating beachy jewelry while I watch it snow. Such delights!!!

I've been inspired to try lots of new things when I should probably be focused on one or two projects. I can't seem to help myself. My muse just wants to play and play and experiment and have fun. Does any one else have this happen to them? I wonder.

I'd love to hear where your muse is taking you. Are others experiencing a winter creative explosion or is it the opposite with the winter bringing you down? Let me know.....

More snow? Really?

The weather people were right - more snow and then it turned to rain as they predicted. Below is a picture I snapped shortly before the storm turned to rain. The snow was falling in big flakes and it looked extremely New Englandly and quite pretty.

It's still raining - or at least, doing some sort of precipitating out there right now at 10 PM. I'm really worried about some of the pine trees and bushes on my property. I tried to shovel, shake and pull off some of the snow where I could reach, but some of my trees are all bent over and miserable. I can only hope they survive. More snow will arrive on Friday. I can't keep up with it all.

Below is a pic of my neighbor's house that I snapped from my living room. The snow was really coming down hard at the time.

Thanks to unusual weather patterns, there's snow on the ground in 49 out of 50 US states, including Hawaii. Florida is the only state without the snow!

It's almost 5 PM and it's still snowing. I went outside to knock the snow off the tall bushes and small trees and I soon found myself deep in the snow. It's kind of heavy and sticky stuff. I'm sure I'll lose a few bushes after this storm.

Anyway, I can't help myself. I have to post some pictures of the storm.

The bush by my front door is bent down so low it's touching the azalea in the front garden. I discovered this when I was trying to get the snow off of it. I was wondering what I was standing on under the snow. I was shocked to realize I was standing on my pretty azalea.

I thought we might loose power, but we've been lucky so far.

Thunder Snow?

OK...I remember once when I was little girl hearing thunder during a blizzard we were experiencing in New York. It really freaked me out. I didn't know that could happen.

Well, today the weather men are talking about "thunder snow" which may happen during the big snow they are predicting to start tonight. I guess, there was some thunder snow during the snow storm we had after Christmas recently. When there is thunder snow we could see as much as 3 to 6 inches of snow in one hour!!!! WOW!

So, what is thundersnow, really?

I found this explanation on the Internet:

As a storm cloud gathers up warmer air (such as air over a lake or ocean surface), the air rises in the cloud's structure and creates a churning of air masses within the cloud. This turbulence mixes snow crystals and supercooled water droplets in the cloud and the turbulence knocks off electrons from the water particles, causing positive and negative charges in the cloud to separate.

The negative charges collect at the base of the cloud and are attracted to positive charges either on the ground or in nearby clouds. As the negative charges rush toward the positive charges, the positive charges rise and meet them and this creates a bolt of lightning. The lightning heats the air to about 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit, causing the air to quickly expand. The air then cools and contracts, creating a "clap" of thunder.

That's what scientists believe happens, anyway. It's roughly the same process involved in creating a regular thunderstorm.

Inner Excavation...

This Christmas was the first year my family decided NOT to exchange gifts. I will admit it was a wise choice, yet it felt kind of strange at the same time. Gifts aren't the most important part of the holiday, but I always enjoyed the exchanging a lot. It turns out that avoiding the Malls, spending almost nothing on gifts, and not having to do a lot of wrapping was a great idea.

Still - I'm the biggest kid in the family and I knew I'd miss the giving. (I've always thought of myself as sort of a "Mrs Santa.")
So, what did I do?

I gave myself a gift instead!!!

I decided to buy a book. It arrived before Christmas. The book is called "Inner Excavation - Explore Your Self through Photography, Poetry, and Mixed Media" written by Liz Lamoreux. This was a great choice. I've been doing some of the exercises. I already love to take photos, I write from time to time, and paint. The book is a nice boost for my creativity. Now, I plan to keep my camera with me whenever I can, and use the book often.

I think it's neat that Liz has my last name within her last name. Anyway, I'm sure I will benefit by looking more closely at myself and the world around me. What a special gift!

I guess, I can't get completely away from giving gifts! I did give my tree a special gift this season. It was a cool find from a Church rummage sale this fall. I rescued this adorable glass ornament made in Poland for my tree.

These bracelets are crafted from gently used denim jeans. I add color to the fabric by felting with wool roving. Then I add fiber or ribbons, and an antique button for decoration. Very unique - one of a kind bracelets.  I'm thrilled to be represented by Starfire Gallery.

What Have I Been Up To in 2010???

2010 went by at record speed. I've never had a year go by so quickly. I'm not sure why this happened because it seemed like a bland year. I didn't do anything amazing or travel to far away exotic places, but never-the-less time flew by.

Every new year I sit down to write a list of what I've learned in the past year. In 2010 I learned to to accept my life as it is. I picked up a book about finding JOY, and in it there was a saying which totally fits my new way of thinking. "What is, is." Such a simple statement. For some reason these words add a bit of comfort to my life and a way of accepting what I can't change.

This doesn't mean I'm going to sit back and not work on improving myself and my life. It just helps me adjust to the limitations before me.

OK...moving on:

In 2010 I decided it was time for my Jewelry and other creations to get out into the world. I now have my enamel jewelry and other pieces in a wonderful gallery store in Newburyport, MA.

This is a sterling silver wire bracelet created with an unusual heart shaped artisan lampwork focal bead. The heart is wrapped in silver wire creating a "captured heart."

This is a reversible enamel pendant that I made through multiple firings in my kiln. I love its beachy look and versatility.

Ipswich, Ma - The Day after Christmas we were hit with a blizzard.

We kept watching the sky like little kids. It was really gray out, and we waited most of the day before it started snowing. The snow was powdery and fine. We had huge gusts of wind, too.

It snowed all afternoon and into the night. It was still snowing the next day. We didn't get as much snow as predicted. I think we were supposed to get 20 inches all told. We might have gotten 10 inches, but with the drifting it seemed like more.

All our windows were blasted with snow. I took a series of photos looking out from inside, and from outside of the house, too. Some of the patterns were interesting, and I like the way the snow looks like a frame in some of the pics.

This was a picture I took looking out our front door right after the storm. The trees by the house were heavy with snow.

It took us four hours to shovel out, but my son did most of the shoveling. My house is on a corner so when the plows come by the driveway gets buried. It didn't seem too cold out even though it was 27 degrees and very windy.

I'm now making Eco-Chic creations!!!

You know how much I love making jewelry - well, recently I've added a new line to my designs! It's called ReStyle Studios and I now upcycle jeans, tee shirts and other clothing into fabulous jewelry.

I make necklaces, bangles, cuff bracelets, purses and more. I'm also starting to use beautiful lace in my creations. Mackworht Island, Maine

Today was a perfect 10 weather wise. No humidity! It sure makes a difference when the humidity is low - It was about 81 degrees and I didn't mind it at all. It was sunny and breezy, too. Just beautiful.

Kevin and I decided to go exploring. We went to Mackworth Island, Maine, right off of Portland. There is a causeway out to the island so you can drive there.

When we arrived the friendly fellow (Ron) at the gatehouse said we were in luck - there were only three parking spaces left. So we parked and then started off on the path around the island. There are several places where you can go down to the shore. At some points it was a steep drop down to the water.

We were surprised at how few pine trees there were especially on the edge of the island. The island is truly lush with trees though. There is also a school for the deaf and hearing impaired on the island.

What a delight to find this magical place! A village built just for Fairys. My very favorite dwelling is the one built overlooking the water. I'm sure the Fairys come dance every night in this lovingly constructed community.

Visit to Exeter NH

My friend introduced me to Exeter NH, and I had a blast exploring.

My creative muse couldn't help but have her spirits lifted. I loved the old Handkerchief Factory - Which has a sign on it's building - Fabric and Furniture. We spent quite some time admiring the beautiful fabric. I even came away with a few ideas for my jewelry from there.

It was a delight to explore the craft and antique/junk stores in Exeter, too.

Our friend the turtle made a dash for under the car. Luckily he came out the other side before we had to drive. He sure could move fast for a little fella.
